Fragrance Garden Basics

When gardeners are considering building a fragrance garden, they should be considering a wide variety of landscape design princples. Here are some things to consider for a scent-filled fragrance garden:

  • Use fragrant plants of various types - this includes fragrant ground covers, bulbs, vines, shrubs, trees, perennials and annuals.
  • Use fragrant plants for different seasons - Gardeners will want to include spring, summer, fall and winter fragrance garden plants in their designs.
  • Use fragrant plants in various locations - Trying adding aromatic plants in containers near windows or doorways where frequent entry into the home will keep the scent fresh. Use fragrant plants near sitting areas, entryways and mailboxes.

Keeping in mind some basics of garden design, even do-it-yourself landscapers can create a fragrant garden that's sure to please both eye and nose.

I have a large area that I will be planting to various flowers this summer. I have been thinking mostly about colors, not fragrances. Your Hub suggested a new idea for me.

Which fragant plants are evergreen? I'm a total novice at gardening and would love some fragant plants in my garden, but I really prefer evergreen. I don't have any fences, its all hedges and a few gaps so would love to fill the gaps with a fragrant hedge, but it would have to be evergreen for privacy!

LaVieja - Camellia's and Thyme are both evergreen or semi-evergreen plants that are great additions to a fragrant garden. Camellia's would do well in a hedge w/shade and acidic soil. Or consider Abelia or some Viburnums (some are evergreen and some are deciduous)
